Description
Tobramycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, especially those caused by Gram-negative bacteria. It acts by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, disrupting the synthesis of essential proteins, and leading to the death of the bacteria. This binding inhibits the translation of mRNA into vital proteins, disrupting bacterial cellular metabolism and resulting in the accumulation of incorrect or misfolded proteins within the cell. This collateral damage to the cell leads to the degradation of these proteins, disrupting normal cellular processes and ultimately leading to the death of the bacterial cell. As an aminoglycoside, Tobramycin is particularly effective against Gram-negative bacteria because of their outer membrane composition, and its lipophilicity allows it to penetrate the bacterial cell membrane, leading to cell lysis and death. Tobramycin is usually administered intravenously or intramuscularly, with the dosage and route of administration depending on the severity of the infection and the patient’s condition. However, its use is limited due to the threat of developing antibiotic resistance. To avoid this, it is important to follow appropriate dosing and complete the full course of treatment to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
